About

Bernd Rieger

My research interests focus on the field of Computational Microscopy that is combining imaging physics and image processing for the application field of light and electron microscopy.

My main application area is in life sciences at the molecular level, with the most notable research activity in single molecule localization microscopy (SMLM or optical nanoscopy). My team aims to develop techniques that offer the highest spatial (and temporal) resolution in microscopic imaging. With this aim, we place ourselves in between purely curiosity and application-driven research. We develop new ways measure the quality of the data and get the most out of it.

Here for example we developed an image resolution measure for SMLM, but we also introduced the concept of “data fusion” to the field of localization microscopy. This technique allows sub-nanometer precision measurements with light on reconstructions from many chemically identical entities. In addition we are currently developing experimental and theoretical means to enable localization microscopy at cryogenic temperature.
