Troy du Pon is our new DOC trainee from the Photonics Groups of The Hague University of Applied Sciences. During his study, applied physics, he followed the minor medical technology in which he applied photonics to solve problems in the medical field. In his last year he followed the specialization course in photonics. As a last phase of his study he is doing his thesis at TNO. During this internship Troy will be working on the DiaLIBS project, this project is created to help kidney patients. By creating a plasma in the spent dialysate, the liquid used to filter the blood, it is possible to measure the potassium, calcium and sodium concentrations from the blood. These concentrations can tell a lot about the wellbeing of the patient, thus monitoring them during a hemodialysis treatment helps for a better end result.
